The replacement pipeline system design includes a number of key design features or enhancements:
- Thicker-wall steel pipeline along US 101
- Installation of heaters at pump stations as needed, to allow use of uninsulated steel pipe
- Redesign of pumping in certain areas to lower operating pressure by as much as 50%
- Construction of a new, additional pump station between Sisquoc and Pentland, in addition to the existing pump stations at Las Flores, Gaviota and Sisquoc
- 49 shutoff valves will be included along the route of the pipelines, more than twice as many as the previous system
- Installation of a cathodic protection system that follows regulatory requirements
- Use of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems to monitor pipeline flows and pressures 24/7
- Use of above-ground, line-of-sight pipeline markers where feasible
